THE NAUTICAL INSTITUTE ON COMMAND

The Nautical Institute

This is the second and revised edition of the Institute’s book on Command. Since 1986 when the first edition was published there have been many changes to the shipping industry. The principal provision affecting all masters has been the introduction of the ISM Code and this figures prominently in the new edition. The organisational structure of companies has changed and on board practices have had to adapt to changing market conditions. Managing these transitions is a major responsibility of command and the book has a new and extended section on management to provide support and practical advice. The technical and environmental section covers GMDSS, marine paints, ships structures, ballast and waste management, pollution prevention and weather routeing. Other chapters cover anchoring large vessels, working with the chief engineer and health on board.

The Nautical Institute on Command is a unique collection of papers written by experienced masters and experts who have set out to demonstrate best practice. This advice will be of value to serving masters for the breadth and detail of its content. The book will also be an invaluable guide for those aspiring to command.
